Fast Help When Your Drains Can’t Wait In Derby
Sewage backing up, a manhole overflowing or no working toilet in Derby? Call 07300 600 950. Our engineers clear blocked drains, toilets, gullies and manholes across Derby (DE1, DE3, DE21–DE24, DE65, DE72, DE73) 7 days a week from 6am to 8pm, with emergency call-outs 365 days a year, no call-out fee and the price agreed before we start.
We don’t quote made-up response times. When you call, we check where our engineers are and tell you when we can realistically be in Derby, and we prioritise sewage inside homes and flooding. Once the drain is flowing, we test it and explain the cause, with a camera check if we think a pipe is damaged.
What We Know About Derby
A drainage emergency is anything that puts sewage or dirty water where people live: a toilet, shower or floor gully pushing waste back up, a manhole lid lifting in the garden, the only toilet in the house out of action, or storm water creeping towards a door or airbrick. Before you ring anyone, ask next door. If their drains are struggling too, or the chamber that's overflowing serves several houses, the fault is probably in Severn Trent's public sewer, and you can report it to Severn Trent on 0800 783 4444 at no cost to you.
Sometimes nothing is blocked at all. Derby City Council's Section 19 investigation into the November 2019 Derwent floods found the river reached its highest peak flow in an 85-year record, and that river water getting into outfall pipes made the sewer system back up. Near Cardinal House, water rose out of a yard gully into an underground electricity sub-station on the evening of 8 November, and the failure blacked out large parts of the city. The owners have since fitted a non-return valve on that gully. At Chaddesden Sidings the report notes a foul manhole that is known to surcharge whenever the area floods.
So when you call us on 07300 600 950, we ask what the river and the weather are doing as well as what your drain is doing. If it's a genuine blockage in your own pipe, we clear it: no call-out fee, the price confirmed before work starts, and drain unblocking from £120 + VAT. We're open 6am to 8pm, 7 days a week, with emergency call-outs 365 days a year.
Whose Drain Is It?
Severn Trent Water owns the public sewers in Derby, plus any drain you share with neighbours or that runs beyond your boundary. Report a problem with those on 0800 783 4444 (24 hours) or online.
Drains that serve only your property and sit inside your boundary are your responsibility — that's the work we do. Road gullies are Derby City Council's. If you rent, your landlord is normally responsible for the drains.
What To Do Until Our Engineer Arrives
Stop using water
Don’t flush, run taps, shower or use the washing machine or dishwasher — every litre adds to the overflow. Ask everyone in the house to do the same.
Keep clear of dirty water
Sewage carries harmful bacteria. Keep children and pets away, wear rubber gloves if you must touch anything, and wash your hands thoroughly afterwards.
Leave heavy covers alone
Manhole covers are heavy, can crack and can trap fingers, and an open chamber is a fall hazard. Leave lifting to our engineers.
Skip the chemicals
Don’t pour drain unblocker, bleach or caustic soda into a blocked drain. It rarely works and can splash back when the drain is opened.
Stay safe around electrics
If water is near sockets or appliances, keep away. Only switch off at the consumer unit if you can reach it from a dry place.
Check with neighbours and take photos
If next door has the same problem, it may be the public sewer. Photos of any damage will help if you make an insurance claim.
