Derby has seen its share of heavy-rain flooding, and blocked gutters make downpours worse: water spills down walls, soaks the ground beside your foundations and backs up into gullies and soakaways. That's why we check the drain each downpipe discharges into, not just the gutter.

Most homes in Derby need a gutter clean once or twice a year — usually late autumn after the leaves fall, and again in spring. Properties near mature trees may need more. On the afternoon of 19 July 2014, a thunderstorm hit Oakwood, and a nearby rain gauge recorded about 52mm that day, roughly the average for the whole of July. That included 17.2mm in the 15 minutes after 3.30pm, a storm the council's investigation put at up to a 1-in-50-year event for that length of time. The report describes water running off roofs, driveways and roads faster than the drains could take it. At least ten homes around Bishops Drive flooded inside.

Clean gutters won't stop a storm like that. Blocked ones do make a cloudburst worse, though: water spills over the corners and runs down the wall instead of into the downpipe. On Derby's Victorian streets, where the Arboretum, Strutts Park and Hartington Street are among the city's sixteen conservation areas, the gutters that matter most are often at the back of a terrace, out of sight. Near the Arboretum, which opened in 1840 as England's first park designed for public use, mature trees fill gutters with leaves and seeds every autumn.
