What causes a blocked drain?

Most blockages build up over time. Fat, oil and grease tipped down the kitchen sink goes hard inside the pipe. Wet wipes and sanitary products catch on the joints. Outside, soil, leaves and silt wash into the gullies. On older clay pipes, tree roots can push in through a cracked or displaced joint.

Once it's blocked, the water backs up, goes down slowly or starts to smell. Get it cleared quickly and you avoid an overflowing manhole, water damage and extra strain on weak joints.

  • Fat, oil and grease (FOG) from kitchens
  • Wet wipes, nappies and sanitary products
  • Leaves, silt and debris in outside gullies
  • Tree root ingress in older clay pipes
  • Collapsed or displaced pipe sections

How we clear blocked drains

First the engineer finds the blockage. That means lifting the inspection chambers and testing each run. A simple blockage comes out with drain rods or an electro-mechanical cleaner. Stubborn fat, scale and silt need high-pressure water jetting. The jet scours the full bore of the pipe, so it doesn't just punch a hole through the middle.

If it keeps blocking, we can run a CCTV camera down the line to see why. You get our recommendation in writing before any repair is done.

Who is responsible for a blocked drain?

In England, the drain that serves only your property is usually yours, up to the boundary. Since 1 October 2011, shared drains and lateral drains outside your boundary have generally been down to the local water company. Across our area that's Severn Trent Water or Anglian Water. On the day, we can tell you which section is blocked and whose it is.

Frequently Asked Questions

Drain unblocking starts from £120 + VAT, and there's no call-out fee. That's for a standard domestic blockage cleared with rods or a jetter. The final price depends on where the blockage is, how easy the drain is to get at, and whether it needs high-pressure jetting or a camera check. You get a fixed price before we start.

Our engineers are out 7 days a week, 6am to 8pm, and we do emergency call-outs 365 days a year. Book online and pick a day (we ring about an hour before we arrive), or call 07300 600 950 for the earliest engineer we have. Most domestic blockages are cleared on the first visit.

Yes. Toilets, sinks, baths, showers, soil stacks, outside gullies, manholes and the main drain run. We use whatever suits the job, from hand rods up to high-pressure water jetting.

Once a drain's been jetted properly, it usually stays clear for a long time. If it keeps blocking, there's normally a reason. A displaced joint, roots getting in, or a sag in the pipe. A CCTV drain survey will find it, and we'll tell you what would fix it for good.

Pipes that serve only your property and sit inside your boundary are usually yours. Shared and lateral drains beyond the boundary are generally the water company's, since the private sewer transfer in October 2011. Our engineer will show you where the blockage is and tell you who should pay.

Sometimes. Put gloves on, lift the gully grate or chamber cover and scoop out the leaves and muck. Then push drain rods towards the blockage and flush it through with a hose. Don't mix chemical unblockers, and don't put your hand into the pipe. If the water still won't go down, the blockage is further along. That needs an engineer to rod or jet it.
