Drain unblocking in the UK usually costs around £100 for a straightforward job, according to national price guides, with call-out fees and evening or weekend charges often added on top. Our blocked drain service starts from £120 + VAT (£144 including VAT), with no call-out fee, and we confirm a fixed price before any work starts. And if the blockage turns out to be in a shared pipe or public sewer, it's usually the water company's to clear, so you shouldn't pay anyone.
This guide sets out sourced price ranges, what actually changes the cost, and how to compare quotes fairly.
How much does it cost to unblock a drain?
Around £100 for an average job, based on MyJobQuote's drain unblocking price guide, updated 2 September 2026. These are typical market ranges, not quotes, and the guide doesn't say whether VAT is included.
| Job | Typical range (MyJobQuote, September 2026) |
|---|---|
| Average drain clearance | Around £100 |
| Drain cleaning | £80 to £100 |
| Unblocking a toilet | £50 to £60 |
| Unblocking a bath or sink | £50 to £70 |
| Outside drain unblocking | £80 to £150 |
| Gully drain cleaning | £80 to £120 |
| Drain rodding | £80 to £145 |
| Drain jetting | £70 to £175 |
| Sewer drain unblocking | £100 to £200 |
| Standard call-out fee | £50 to £100 (usually covers the first hour) |
| Emergency, evening or weekend call-out | £100 to £200 |
The call-out line matters. A low headline price plus a call-out fee can end up costing more than a higher price with no call-out fee, so always compare the total.
What do we charge to unblock a drain?
Our published starting prices, all plus VAT:
| Service | From |
|---|---|
| Blocked drains (toilets, sinks, gullies, chambers, main drains) | £120 + VAT |
| CCTV drain survey | £149 + VAT |
| Drain repairs | £250 + VAT |
| Call-out fee | None |
The final unblocking price depends on where the blockage is, access, and whether it needs rods or high-pressure jetting. We confirm a fixed price before we start. If we find something that changes the job, such as a broken pipe rather than a simple blockage, we stop and explain the options and the new price before doing anything else. Ask for a quote for your own drain.
What affects the cost of drain clearance?
Five things drive the price more than anything else.
| Factor | Usually cheaper | Usually dearer |
|---|---|---|
| Where the blockage is | Sink trap, toilet or first gully | Deep in the main drain or near the boundary |
| Access | Light, easy-to-lift chamber covers | Buried, sealed or missing chambers |
| Method | Hand rods | Jetting, or rods and jetting together |
| What caused it | Paper, leaves, fresh debris | Hardened fat, wipes packed tight, roots |
| Condition of the pipe | Sound pipe | Cracked, displaced or collapsed pipe needing repair |
Timing matters too. Evening, weekend and bank holiday work often costs more with firms that charge an out-of-hours rate. And if a drain keeps blocking, a camera survey adds to the first bill but can save repeat call-outs by showing the real cause. See what a CCTV drain survey costs.
How much does emergency drain unblocking cost?
More than a planned visit at many firms. MyJobQuote gives £100 to £200 for an emergency, evening or weekend call-out, and that is usually on top of the work itself. What counts as "out of hours" differs from company to company, so ask what the charge is and when it applies before you agree to anyone coming out.
Our engineers work 7 days a week from 6am to 8pm, we offer emergency call-outs 365 days a year, and there is no call-out fee. If sewage is overflowing now, our emergency drainage page explains what to do while you wait: stop using water, keep people and pets away from the overflow and don't lift heavy covers.
Is drain jetting more expensive than rodding?
Sometimes, but not always. MyJobQuote's ranges overlap: £80 to £145 for rodding and £70 to £175 for jetting. Rodding pushes through a blockage and suits paper, wipes and simple obstructions close to a chamber. Jetting uses a powered high-pressure water jet to scour the whole bore of the pipe, which is what shifts hardened fat, silt, scale and fine roots. A good engineer will tell you which method they plan to use and why, and won't jet a pipe that rods would clear.
Why do some quotes rise once the engineer arrives?
Usually because the job turned out to be different from what was described, or because the first price didn't include everything. A "from" price should always come with an explanation of what changes it. If a blockage is actually a collapsed pipe, the job becomes a repair, which is priced separately; our guide to drain relining vs excavation explains the options.
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 51, where a contract for a service doesn't fix a price, the consumer must pay "a reasonable price for the service, and no more". Agreeing the price before work starts avoids the argument altogether.
Do drain unblocking prices include VAT?
Not always, so check. VAT is charged at the standard rate of 20% on most goods and services. Our prices are quoted plus VAT, so a £120 + VAT job is £144 in total. Price guides don't always say whether their figures include VAT, which can make a VAT-registered firm look more expensive than it is.
When should you not have to pay to unblock a drain?
When the blockage isn't in your pipe. Citizens Advice says you are responsible for drains inside your boundary that serve only your property, and that the water company is responsible for lateral drains and public sewers. Since 1 October 2011, under the Water Industry (Schemes for Adoption of Private Sewers) Regulations 2011, most pipes shared with neighbours have been the water company's too.
If your neighbours' drains are also affected, report it to the water company before paying anyone. Severn Trent, which covers most of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, takes sewer blockage reports on 0800 783 4444. If we find the blockage is in the public sewer, we'll tell you. See who is responsible for blocked drains and, for rented homes, landlord or tenant: who pays.
Does insurance cover drain unblocking?
Usually not for a simple blockage. Many home insurance policies cover accidental damage to underground pipes but exclude blockages and wear and tear, and some people have home emergency cover that includes drains. Wording varies, so read your own policy. Our guide to whether home insurance covers drain damage explains what to check.
How can you avoid paying too much?
Use this checklist before you book anyone:
- Ask for the total price before anyone sets off, including any call-out, hourly, out-of-hours or disposal charges.
- Ask whether VAT is included.
- Ask what method they'll use and why. Jetting should be justified by what's in the pipe.
- Ask what happens if it's bigger than expected, and make sure they'll stop and agree a new price before carrying on.
- Check whether it's the water company's job if neighbours are affected.
- Ask to see the problem: the full chamber, the cleared blockage or the camera footage.
- Don't agree to repairs without evidence. Expensive work should be backed by CCTV images and a written quote.
Can you unblock a drain yourself for less?
Often, yes. A plunger clears most toilet and sink blockages, and a set of drain rods costs less than one call-out. Our guides to unblocking a toilet, unblocking a sink and unblocking an outside drain walk you through it. Never mix chemical drain cleaners, and don't lift heavy covers or anything on public land.
When to call a professional
Call a drainage engineer if DIY hasn't worked, if several fittings are blocked at once, if sewage is backing up, or if the drain keeps blocking. We clear blocked drains across Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, Derby, Leicester and Lincolnshire, 7 days a week from 6am to 8pm, with emergency call-outs 365 days a year and no call-out fee. Unblocking is a one-off service; repairs such as lining, patching and pipe replacement come with a 12-month workmanship guarantee.
