Fat has been a known problem in Lincoln's sewers for years. In 2011 there were 175 fat-related blockages in the city, and Anglian Water responded with its Keep It Clear campaign, writing to thousands of households and giving food businesses guidance on disposing of fat, oil and food scraps. The same year, blockages in the foul sewer at Woodhall Drive and Nocton Drive sent sewage into the Roaring Meg Drain, and Anglian Water was fined £32,000 at Lincoln Magistrates' Court.

Anglian Water still runs Keep It Clear. It says its network suffers more than 30,000 blockages a year, many of them caused by fats, oils, grease, food waste, sanitary items and wipes, and that 80% of them are avoidable. Its advice is to bin kitchen fat and only flush the three Ps: pee, poo and paper.
