The ground under Leicester is not uniform. According to the British Geological Survey, Mercia Mudstone is up to about 200 metres thick beneath the city, covered in many places by sheets of till left by the Anglian glaciation, with river terrace sands and gravels and softer alluvium along the Soar and its brooks. Both conditions shape the repair. A patch or full-length liner seals leaks without disturbing the surrounding ground, but a section that has dropped, or has a void under it, may need digging out and re-bedding first.
