The British Geological Survey's memoir for the Grantham district gives a good sense of what's under the town's drains. The rocks are Jurassic and dip very gently east. Lias mudstones form the lower ground, the Marlstone Rock ironstone and Lincolnshire Limestone form the higher ground, and there are sand and gravel river terraces along the Witham between Grantham and Barkston, including around Manthorpe and Belton.

The memoir also sets out the hazards. The Lincoln Edge escarpment is prone to landslip. Some mudstones, particularly the Blisworth Clay, are liable to shrink as they dry out. There's also evidence of cambering, where the rock has slowly sagged and slipped, around the Marlstone Rock outlier between Barrowby and Great Gonerby. Any of these can move a pipe, so a drain that has cracked, pulled apart at a joint or dropped out of line may have a geological cause rather than just old age.
