Grantham has seen its share of heavy-rain flooding, and blocked gutters make downpours worse: water spills down walls, soaks the ground beside your foundations and backs up into gullies and soakaways. That's why we check the drain each downpipe discharges into, not just the gutter.

Most homes in Grantham need a gutter clean once or twice a year — usually late autumn after the leaves fall, and again in spring. Properties near mature trees may need more. East of the Witham, Grantham's St Anne's conservation area covers about 62.6 hectares and was designated in January 2013. South Kesteven's appraisal of the area explains that it grew after new river crossings were built in the late 1850s, when speculative builders laid out a suburb called New Somerby. Its houses are mostly Victorian and Edwardian, in red brick with Welsh slate roofs, and the appraisal asks owners to keep chimneys as part of the historic roofscape.

Slate roofs shed water quickly, so a gutter has to be clear to keep up. The appraisal says trees and hedgerows are numerous in the northern half, around the school playing fields and Wyndham Park, which was established as Slate Mill Park in 1912, but are not a significant feature further south. Houses near the park and the school grounds usually collect far more debris than the terraces towards Granville Street.

The ground rises gently from the valley floor to the foot of the limestone escarpment, then more steeply, about 60 metres from river to crest. On sloping streets, a gutter that overflows at the back can send water across yards towards the houses below, and chimney stacks need careful ladder work. House types run from very modest terraces to grander town houses and villas, so one job can be a single front gutter and the next several roof slopes.
