Birstall began to grow when the Great Central Railway arrived in 1899, and its population rose from 611 in 1901 to over 11,000 by 2001. Hallam Fields, begun in 2006, was planned for up to 900 homes, so the village's drains range from early 20th-century house connections to recent estate sewers.
