Linby Colliery closed in 1988 and the parish lies within the defined coalfield, which makes a coal mining check sensible before new drainage.
The parish has grown with new homes on Wighay Road, and its neighbourhood plan also covers the Top Wighay Farm and North of Papplewick Lane development sites. New-build drains are plastic, but builders' debris left in the runs often causes early blockages.
