On 23 July 2013 heavy rain overwhelmed Calverton's surface-water systems, with Main Street worst hit, according to Nottinghamshire County Council's investigation.
Calverton Colliery operated from 1952 to 1999, and a large part of the village grew up around it.
Nottinghamshire County Council describes Calverton as sitting at the bottom of a natural valley, drained by surface water sewers, highway drains and ordinary watercourses that outfall to the Dover Beck on its eastern edge. Steep ground can send large overland flows into these systems, and after the 2013 flood some watercourses and highway drains were found partly blocked.
In the same storm, water running down Bonner Lane and off fields to the south flooded gardens and homes on Spindle View and Church View, and the watercourse serving Crookdole Lane and Cloverfields overflowed. Its riparian owners were told it needed maintenance, and Severn Trent added a flood mitigation project to its investment programme.
